Summer Time

This summer we completed the wildlife pool in the Green Lanes nursery. When building the nursery across last winter several springs bubbled up - so we diverted them into a purpose built pool. Not only does this help with drainage and irrigation but also provides habitat for our local amphibians and snakes. Already frogs, toads and newts have moved in and large grass snakes spotted near by.

At the begining of the year we suffered from some serious Grey Squirrel damage. In previous years they had left our young tree alone but this year they destroyed approximately 7,000 new trees, mainly Oaks and Sweet Chestnut.

We have held several volunteer picnics across the summer - with mainly weeding jobs but now as harvest time approaches we are getting busier with seed collecting and preparation. Rowan, Ash, Hazel and Birch are some of the first to collect, and help is always greatly appreciated! (email us at info@greendragonwoods.org.uk to help out)

Pictures here show: Above a volunteer picnic. Right Grey Squirrel damage to Sweet Chestnut. Below left, kids play in the new pool.

We also ran stalls at several events including the Sunrise Celebration and The Big Green Gathering. Many thanks to the organisers for inviting us along. We now sell a small range of top quality woodland and bushcraft tools (see Hand Tools). Below are some pictures of the crew and stall.

We are also begining a new nut production project this year. We'll be experimenting with high yielding Sweet Chestnut varieties and planting up new coppice woodland and nut groves. See picture below for a view over one of the new grove sites.
