Timber Frame Barn Building
The management plan of the 15 acre ancient oak woodland at the
Landmatters site started last winter with a government Life Into
Landscapes grant that was given by the Devon Wildlife Trust. The
first phase of the plan was to thin some of the over crowded trees
to allow for regeneration of the area with younger trees. The work
was carried out by volunteers and heavy horses were used to move
the extracted timber.
The thinnings were then used to start construction of a traditional
timber framed hay barn on the top of the hill. The Landmatters
site has approximately 27 acres of hay meadow – much of which
is unimproved and therefore very rare wild flower and insect habitat.
In order to maintain these fragile environments it is necessary
to graze them and mow the hay. The hay barn is a greatly needed
facility that will help the efforts to preserve and encourage the
biodiversity of the meadows.

The use of the thinnings to construct the barn is a good example
of Permaculture in practice. Human needs as well as the interests
of the wildlife and landscape are all balanced and sustainable
solutions found.
To date two of the four timber frames needed to complete the
barn have been built. The joints have all been cut using hand tools
and the work has opened up many exciting opportunities for volunteers
to learn timber framing skills.
