At Green Dragon tree planting is not just about ceremoniously digging a hole and sticking a tree in it.

When you sponsor Green Dragon Tree Planting you are also supporting the nurseries that over time will nurture many thousands of trees.

The Green Dragon Conservation Tree Nurseries are dedicated to strengthening regional bio-diversity and practice, as standard, the growing of all our trees from hand-picked locally sourced seeds. Once picked the seeds are tested for viability and are prepared to maximise their chances of germination. Some species will germinate the following spring while others may take a couple of years to break dormancy. In each case the different seed types have to be properly stored and protected from rodents and birds.

Once sprouted the vulnerable seedlings are kept safe in the nursery beds away from foraging animals such as voles, rabbits and deer. They are kept here for a minimum of two years and encouraged to develop healthy root systems and vigorous top growth.

Then, before they can be planted out, the planting site must be carefully considered. At Green Dragon we manage our tree planting to maximise bio-diversity. Large dense monocultures of forest don’t support a wide variety of life but an area that has a good mix of different habitats can support a huge range of species.
